RUNAWAY x G YAMAZAWA Heart Mountain Jersey
Posted on 19 December 2017
RUNAWAY and G YAMAZAWA have teamed up once again for a new capsule collection honoring the baseball players of Heart Mountain internment camp who were forced into incarceration during World War II.
In response to the attack on Pearl Harbor, roughly 120,000 Japanese Americans were imprisoned into 10 internment camps throughout the West Coast. During this time, baseball leagues were formed as a way to distract players from their hardships. Because of baseball’s prevalence throughout American popular culture, prisoners “likened donning a baseball jersey to wearing the U.S. flag.”
“They took part in the great American pastime, even as the U.S. government imprisoned them and questioned their place in America.” - Philip Byrd, The National Museum of American History
The collaborative jersey is available in three locations: the RUNAWAY flagship store, online at gyamazawa.com, and the Japangeles flagship store.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit youth baseball programming for low-income minorities through the Durham Bulls Youth Athletic League.
The retro-inspired baseball jersey is made from double-knit heavyweight polyester with a pinstriped body and sewn-on twill lettering and number accents.
