The Rundown - October 30
Posted on 30 October 2017
The RUNDOWN, after missing in action, is back this week with a vengeance.
My calculated plan was to riff about how Snow tha Product, an aggressive, poppy bilingual blend of Nicki Minaj and Eve with a slightly more conscious tilt who aspires to use her platform as an opportunity to uplift others fighting issues like depression and alcoholism while simultaneously enjoying the finer things in life, was playing at Motorco Music Hall this Sunday at 7 p.m.
Plan A.
That is until I received a notice minutes ago from The Art of Cool Project saying the Queens legend Pharoahe Monch, one half of 90s hip-hop duo Organized Konfusion and a prominent figure in the wave of early 2000s conscious emcees that included regular collaborators Black Thought, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and the ol’ Kanye, is playing with Brooklyn’s PitchBlak Brass Band as part of Duke Performances’ Hip-Hop Initiative at 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 2 at Reynolds Industries Theater.
Plan B.
For the ambitious rap fan, the shows bookend the post-Halloween weekend and would make for contrasting experiences; precise lyricism and live instrumentation versus the quintessential 2017 trap-pop sound.
Choose your adventure, but my money is on the live band. It’s a lost art and rarely disappoints, especially with a performer of Monch’s caliber.
